Wolves is a 2014 teen werewolf flick. That genre is definitely not my kind of movie and found the majority of “Wolves” relatively boring. In all honesty the only reason I watched this was for the beautifully stunning Merritt Patterson. And she did not disappoint. Even though Merritt Patterson wasn’t the main character, the story focuses on her boyfriend, she got plenty of screen time and look hot in just about every shot. Oh, and Merritt Patterson can also act. Granted I’ve only seen in her in “girl next door hottie badass” type roles, but Merritt Patterson is actually believable in them. Wolves also has small parts for two of some of my other favorite actresses: Miriam McDonald who did the only watchable incarnation of Degrassi and the best installment in the Poison Ivy series, and Melanie Scrofano of Saw 6, Nurse 3D and currently Wynonna Earp fame. All of the actresses were fine and the script of Wolves wasn’t horrible, it was about what you’d expect from a teen werewolf movie. For some reason I think the pacing was off and events happened at odd times and I could never quite get into the movie Wolves.
Wolves starts out on a character named Cayden played by Lucas Till, as he quarterbacks his high school football team. Like a normal teen werewolf he doesn’t realize his own strength, beats up another kid, meets a weird guy in a bar and decides to go looking for his birth parents. Finally enter the real star of Wolves, Merritt Patterson. Merritt Patterson’s character tends the town bar in which Cayden ends up. Merritt Patterson’s character immediately sets her sights on a sexual relationship with Cayden. As it turns out the whole town is a pack of werewolves lead by a ruthless tyrant who rules in a small pack on the outskirts of the community. And of course Merritt Patterson’s character in the movie was promised to be married to the pack leader and so the whole movie was the pack leader trying to get her back and mate with her.
In the movie Merritt Patterson’s family befriends Cayden and after some of the predictable lessons on how to be a werewolf, the whole family gets kidnapped by the pack leader. Merritt Patterson’s character is bound to some wood planks by a bonfire, as if the wolves have some sort of mating ritual. Never heard of wolves using bondage and fire and chanting when they’re doing it doggy style, but OK. It is still a pretty hot scene. Merritt Patterson looks like she’s a little out of it and she is tied up, but her clothing in the scene isn’t great and there’s too much of it. Also since Merritt Patterson is supposedly drugged, the camera focuses on all the other characters most of the scene, which hurt the scene.
If I was doing it, I would have focused just on Merritt Patterson and have the sound be distorted like Merritt Patterson’s character was hearing it in her drugged state. Then you could have the camera scroll around to the different groups at the campsite, but always keep their images slightly out of focus. Then the audience could listen to each conversation briefly while still having Merritt Patterson in the shot and then you could do the whole saving everybody, end of the movie fight scene. That brings me to all the problems I had with the sex scene.
Merritt Patterson did look super hot in it, the scene was well lit and a decent length. The camera work once again hurt it all. It moves around way too much and stay steady on Merritt Patterson or even the couple. It goes from side angles to top angles to shooting from above and whether intentional or not the majority of scene have Merritt Patterson’s boobs covered up by an arm or a hand or something. Which is especially weird cause it’s not a body double, Merritt Patterson may have a lot of extra makeup on but it’s definitely her. I’m going to stop complaining now though cause I’m just glad Merritt Patterson did the nude scene, she is spectacular.
